Als das Somatheeram 1985 auf einem Palmenhügel über dem Strand von Chowara eröffnete, steckte dahinter eine Idee, die es in Indien so noch nicht gab: ein echtes Ayurveda-Hospital mitten in einem Urlaubsresort. Indiens erstes Ayurveda-Resort war geboren – und ist bis heute einer der schönsten Orte, dieser Heilkunst zu begegnen. Terrassenförmig zieht sich die Anlage den Hang hinab, vorbei an tropischen Blüten, bis nur noch das Arabische Meer den Horizont füllt.
Aus der Idee von damals ist eine Institution geworden, bis heute geführt von der Gründerfamilie Mathew: vielfach als bestes Ayurveda-Resort Indiens ausgezeichnet, von der indischen Regierung in die „Hall of Fame” aufgenommen und als Ayurveda-Hospital akkreditiert. Geblieben ist, was den Anfang ausmachte – ernsthafte Medizin in einer Umgebung, die sich nach Ferien anfühlt.
Terraces over the Arabian Sea
The somatheeram inhabits a whole slope: over several levels, gardens, paths and houses stagger down the hill, in between hammocks stretch into the palm grove, and in the greenery is the pool, where you will be cared for from eight to eighteen o’clock. With the major renovation after the coronavirus period, the house has done something remarkable: it has almost halved the number of its rooms – in favor of calm, space and a care where no one disappears in the crowd.
An elevator and stairs lead down to the beach of Chowara, where sunbeds, umbrellas and cloths are available, and further to the upstream sister house AyurSoma – whose pool you can use as well as that of the neighboring Manaltheeram. In the resort itself, Ayurveda shop, pharmacy, tailoring and 24-hour room service ensure that everyday life has short distances.
Living like in a Keral village
Instead of a hotel building, a grown ensemble of cottages and traditional Kerala houses awaits you, scattered across the garden terraces – built from clay bricks and other natural building materials in the region, as Kerala has been building for centuries. The houses are thus naturally well ventilated; the air conditioning system can be switched off in every room, completely in the Ayurvedic sense, while the large ceiling fan provides gentle cooling.
Six categories are available – from the standard room near the Ayurveda Center to the Garden and Special Cottages to the Kerala Houses with their antique doors and furniture and the only suite of the house. Everywhere include mosquito net, Wi-Fi, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, TV and a bathroom with hairdryer and toiletries.
A hospital between palm trees
Behind the holiday scenery, a full-fledged hospital works: The Ayurveda Center, which is over 5,000 square meters in size, is accredited as a NABH hospital and is the only house in India to bear the Ayurveda SPA Europe certificate, plus the Ayur Diamond Award from the government of Kerala. It is led by chief physician Dr. Seena, who has been practicing for over 35 years, and six other Ayurveda doctors are at her side. Ladies are always treated by therapists, gentlemen of therapists.
Your treatment begins with a comprehensive initial examination including traditional pulse diagnosis. With this and all daily doctor’s consultations, a German-speaking translator, free of charge, can help on request. The drugs are produced in the in-house, GMP-certified manufactory – from our own herb garden, where over 600 medicinal plants grow according to the historical plant book Hortus Malabaricus. Around the clock is a doctor in the house, and for each treatment you will receive fresh cotton kimonos daily.
First the pulse diagnosis, then the plan
Nine official spa programs of the house are bundled into three clear cures – wholesal cure, special cure and intensive treatment. Each of them knows several focal points, and which one suits you, enlightens itself in the doctor’s consultation after the initial consultation. The wholeness cure Panchakarma & Rasayana is the classic way, with about one and a half to two hours of applications daily and three possible focal points: rejuvenation from seven nights, deep body cleansing or immunization to strengthen the defenses from 14 nights – whereby the immunization ideally unfolds its full effect at 28 nights.
With about two and a half hours of treatment per day, the special treatment is dedicated to concrete concerns: weight reduction, beauty care, back, neck and neck discomfort or psoriasis. And the intensive treatment – from 14, ideal from 21 nights – distributes around three hours of treatment over two sessions daily, optionally with a focus on anti-stress or anti-aging: in the case of burnout prevention, sleep disorders, migraines, menopausal and circulatory problems as well as in osteoporosis or neurological topics.
From beginner to yoga teacher
Three times a day, the house gathers for group yoga, cleanly separated according to skill: in the morning the experienced, in the morning the beginners, in the afternoon the advanced – in addition to twice daily meditation. It is practiced in two yoga halls or on two open platforms, where the view widens over the sea when breathing. If you prefer to practice alone, book an individual lesson with the teacher.
The in-house Ayurveda Academy shows how serious the somatheeram is about yoga: certified yoga teachers are trained here, and courses in Ayurvedic massage art are also open. So if you like, take home not only recreation, but a craft.
Everyone here eats after their dosha
The open restaurant serves a buffet that is second to none: around 250 Ayurvedic dishes dominate the cuisine, each marked according to the constitution types Vata, Pitta and Kapha. So you choose with a look what corresponds to your diet plan – and if not, the nutritionist sits in the room. Ayurvedic herbal tea is available all day, and fresh coconut milk awaits after the treatment.
Those who grow for weight loss receive specially compiled menus. Accompanying persons without a cure do not have to do without anything: For them, the house also cooks Indian, European and Chinese à la carte. And at the regular cooking demonstrations, the kitchen reveals how the principles of dosha teaching can be continued at home.
A house for almost every concern
The great strength of the somatheeram is its range: Ayurveda newcomers find a gentle entry with the rejuvenation cure from seven nights, while people with chronic complaints in the special or intensive treatment experience the full depth of the healing art – each supported by the same hospital quality. If you are looking for medical seriousness without wanting to do without a pool, beach and a lively resort, this is the place.
Even as a couple with different plans, the house works wonderfully, because accompanying persons without a cure are expressly welcome. Guests are allowed from the age of twelve, and for families or longer stays, the suite is ideal in the large Kerala wooden house. A practical tip: You can reserve your preferred treatment times at the time of booking.
Just behind Kovalam, the calm begins
The somatheeram is located on the southern Malabar coast, on the hill above the beach of Chowara – nine kilometers south of the lively seaside resort of Kovalam and thus just far enough to leave its hustle and bustle behind. From Trivandrum International Airport it is only about 20 kilometers; the transfer takes about 30 minutes and is included in the spa price.

From the beach to the backwaters
The most beautiful destination of Kerala is part of the package: From 14 nights, a half-day excursion through the legendary backwaters is included. It goes with a houseboat into the silent water world of canals and lagoons in the hinterland of the coast. For all other destinations, the reception helps: the lively Kovalam with its cafes and shops, Trivandrum with temples and markets or India’s southern tip in Kanyakumari.
Those who stay, still have a program: In the evenings, traditional dance and music performances in colourful costumes bring the culture of Kerala into the house, weekly an artist shows the art of Mehndi, and guided tours through herb garden and medicine manufactory let you look behind the scenes of medicine. In between, the beach, the pool and a hammock with sea view are sufficient.
What keeps the hill green
The protection of nature has been part of the founding idea since 1985: The herb garden preserves more than 600 medicinal plant species of Kerala and is thus a living archive of regional biodiversity. Solar energy supplies the plant, rainwater is collected and returned to the groundwater via seepage pits, the own sewage treatment plant prepares wastewater for garden irrigation, waste is consistently separated – and plastic bottles have a ban on houses.
The social responsibility has also grown: vegetables, honey and spices are sourced from the tribal cooperative Attappadi. “Masalas” and grain come from small businesses run by women of the surrounding villages. Most of the employees are from the neighborhood and are trained in the house. Once a week, the team goes out together to clean the beach.

Standard room
The four standard rooms share a house below the Ayurveda Center. If you appreciate short distances to the treatment, you live here in the right place. Shops and pharmacy are also right next door. The view goes into the exotic garden, and in front of the house there are seats to linger in the countryside.
Garden Cottage
The twelve Garden Cottages are freely located in the upper part of the complex. Ayurveda center, reception and restaurant are just a few steps away. Built of clay bricks in a traditional construction, the bungalows remain pleasantly tempered by nature; on the terrace with sitting area, the garden is all yours.
Special Cottage with Sea View
The eight special cottages are located in the lower part of the resort facing the sea: from the terrace you can look out through the tops of the palm trees on the Arabian Sea – depending on the location of the cottage, sometimes more enchanted, because the tropical garden grows lush here. They are also built from regional natural materials in a traditional form.
Kerala House Standard
The ten Kerala House Standard are traditional wooden houses in the South Indian architectural style, which are a bit off and therefore particularly quiet. Ancient doors and furniture tell of the craftsmanship of Kerala, and with more living space, larger bathrooms and spacious terraces, the houses offer noticeably more space than the cottages.
Kerala House Deluxe
The five Kerala House Deluxe combine traditional wooden architecture with sea views and the best location near the pool. Three of the houses are free for maximum privacy, two more rooms reside in the large Kerala wooden house, which with its antique doors and furniture is one of the jewels of the resort – each with its own entrance. From the covered porch, the view wanders through the palm trees to the water.
Kerala Deluxe Suite
The only suite of the Somatheeram is located in the large traditional Kerala wooden house near the pool – with a separate living room, private bedroom and a covered veranda from which you can look out to the sea. Antique doors and furniture give the rooms the dignity of old ceralic home decor, their own entrance ensures undisturbed privacy.
